Default Designer portfolio question

I was trying to decide if this would be a good plan or not. Perhaps, one of you have done it and can tell me if it helped.

I was playing with the idea of building multiple portfolio sites for my web designs. I was thinking of getting a domain that contains my name as well as using some of my free web space to display my work through more than one site. I figured if my business site draws 'xxx' number of visitors per month, I might be able to double or triple that by putting up multiple sites displaying the same designs.

Does anyone do this? Is it a stupid plan? Will it create grief with the search engines? Just kinda thinkin' out loud. Plus I thought one of you might have some insight.

I think it depends on the search engine. Some search engines might not like that. And, you also have to think if people will approve of that. I know that if *I* encountered sites of the sort, I wouldn't approve of them, but it's up to you. I understand if you have many domains pointing to *one* site, but to have copies of the same thing seems a bit useless to me. If you just want to have more exposure, there are other ways to do so. Remember that a high amount of visitors might not amount to much unless they are actually interested on being your clients or making you gain a decent revenue from any ads you may have in your site.

I doubt very seriously that I would ever actually do this, since my offline promotion has been much more productive for getting clients.

My thought regarding this, though, was that if I'm getting x number of unique visitors to my current portfolio I could possibly double or triple that if I where to launch multiple sites. It is kinda like buying more than one lotto ticket to help your odds. With some 69 million listings on Google for the keywords 'professional web design', the odds of one person finding the duplicates and being upset over it is next to impossible. I also don't seeing this being a problem with the search engines since the only thing the sites would actually have in common is some jpg's of the screenshots
