Not everyone does but there are some that do. They're losing their quality because so many people see them as only corrupted.

The majority of disgruntled people are people who have submitted their site and their site wasn't good enough to be listed.
Not every submission is approved or good enough to enter. It depends on the category and editor.

DMOZ hands down has been the best directory. It could use a purge/cleanup though.

Only bad thing is I'm sure it wouldn't be free anymore. Would Google still piggyback off of DMOZ at that point?

When people like Shoemoney get threatened to be removed from the directory unless they pay grands, it's not the site that has problems[obviously, since he was already listed, it's the editor.

This is one of those large rumors going around, the even bigger part is that the google directory is a mirror of what dmoz has listed.

No but if you think your site isn't good enough, I wouldn't even try submitting it.
