What are your experiences with gmail. I love it but I just recently read a magazine article talking about how google is collecting personal information through gmail. Im not sure how it works but they are talking about how google is rethinking how they programming gmail.

So far so good. I highly doubt that GMail is looking to screw anyone over.

I actually like it despite my personal opinion of Google as a whole. There are a few things that they do very well and gmail is one of those things, IMO.

Actually, I don't like how they can't identify spam and my inbox ends up with over 2,000 spam e-mails! I also don't like how nothing is really deleted forever and they keep your trash. There's a bunch of things that GMail does that I don't like but just sending and receiving e-mails is alright.

Ya gmail's spam filter is pretty bad, I get quite a bit of spam in my inbox and have to spend a lot of time deleting them as they are usually in between my real emails.

Do you still need to be invited by a user to get a gmail account?

Well, not through mobile. But, otherwise, yes. You get a free invite through cellphones.

Well, I'm sure there are people who like to keep their personal information off from the Internet. I don't especially like giving out where I live, etc. unless I have to. Usually, my other personal info is fine until it gets to details such as phone number, where I live, etc. Those, I think, are getting a bit too specific.

There's no point in giving out my address without a reason. Unless I'm getting a take-out, why would I give my address? And, online things aren't as secure as anything outside of the Internet. On the Internet, people are shielded behind their computers. When you are at a restaurant, you do see people face to face. But, that's a completey different topic from Gmail.

This article is accually an exageration. Under US law, after 80 days ALL digital mail is open for public use. Thats right, ALL. Yahoo!, Hotmail, AOL, Google, they all have full access to every message that has been left for 80 days.

I use to like gmail because of their free smtp and pop facilities...But now I use my own customized e-mail so don't use them much...But it's a good service as far as my experience is concerned...

Google will collect all the data from your emails to advertise even better. I stick with my own webserver and with my own privacy.
