| | Yahoo! domains
Does anyone else have domains through Yahoo? I was surprised to find that they have a very easy, straight -forward control panel. I may make them my preferred domain registrar.

I prefer godaddy or namecheap over yahoo, and if google had a domain registeration service, I would prefer them overall, even thoguh its not in exsistence.

I just transferred to GoDaddy, but i dont like their interface. For first 10 minutes i dint even know where to change the info. then i found when you click it it loads up in the right side column, looking as though they are just important notes to remember.

Yeah, I have domains at GoDaddy and Yahoo and I really prefer the Yahoo domain management system.
I used Dotster years ago and it seems theirs was quite a bit more complicated then it needed to be, as well. They may have improved things by now though.

The Yahoo management system is ok. I don't think it is the easiest or the best, but it doesn't give me headaches either.

If I were you, I'd use a more popular registrar... and I think that offer is only good for one domain per person.

Nice looking forum, this is my first post.
Yahoo Domains... since it's come up, I'll answer from experience.
The offer a great price for domain names but it's not without a cost. When you purchase a domain name from yahoo domains, you sign the agreement and then you are automatically on Auto-Renew. So lets say you purchase 40 domains with yahoo and you are using them for your registrar. I will tell you that without notice, when these names are close to renewal, yahoo will hit your card for $9.99 for each domain renewal. Although that's nice of them, what if you changed your mind on some of those names and no longer wanted them so you were just going to let them expire?
The fact that yahoo renews your names is not the issue. They do it with absolutely no notice to you. Normally, most registrars you can choose to renew as they will send you an expire notice in 60 and 30 days. Yahoo doesn't do this. If you registered 10 domains in one day, you are going to be charged $99.90 in a year for your renewals. No notice, just auto renew. So be prepared.
Now, you can turn off this auto renewal feature but when you do, your domain no longer shows up in your account. You CANNOT change your name servers, you CANNOT forward your domain, you CANNOT change the whois. Simply put, it's gone. It's a bait and switch tactic for yahoo. What you have to do is set it so you can transfer the domain out. Now, you cannot see the domain but if do a whois search, you will see it’s still yours and you can request a transfer to another registrar and it should go through.
Aside from renewing your domain, managing your domain name in Yahoo domains is a pain in the rump. You first have to unlock your domain and that’s a four-step process that isn’t the quickest. Then in another 3 steps you can change the name servers. After the nameservers are changed, then you go back through the process of locking up your domain again. So you have to unlock, then change name servers, then re-lock your domain. There are no bulk domain management options with yahoo.
If you’d just rather forward your domain you can do that also but yahoo ads will show up as that’s part of their forwarding program.
When I’ve transferred domains out of yahoo, they just automatically transfer if they are unlocked with no email to me. In essence, if your name isn’t locked and you’ve got it on Yahoo, it could very easily be lost or stolen so I suggest everyone using yahoo, lock your domains. I think during registration they now lock them automatically but I could be wrong.
So all in all, buy a few domains from yahoo and make sure you buy them for 5 years at that wonderful $2.99 price. Then in 60 days, transfer them to another registrar out of yahoo and gain yet another year. Remember, don’t forget to transfer them out and don’t forget about your domain names because yahoo isn’t going to remind you when they take money out of your account to renew.
Personally, I’ve never hosted with Yahoo so I don’t know much about the value added service. You see, after the horrible experience with Registerfly hosting, I'm done dealing with companies that don't build trust with their customers. Maybe yahoo has good hosting features, I wouldn’t know because I’d never be willing to give them the chance after seeing their domain name program and their online auctions.
For Registrars, I choose Fabulous. It's for owners of portfolios of over 50 with quality domain names. They've been just that, Fabulous. Management, parking, locking, executive locking, monitoring, graphs, you name it. Name.com is one I've heard much about. I've transferred a few to them and they are getting more but I'll write more when I know them better. Godaddy was not a problem, just hard to manage domains. NameCheap seems to be real good.
One I highly do not recommend is Registerfly. Tempting yes, but I've had almost 500 names with them over 2 years, the worst experience ever.
Well, that’s my opinion and I’m going to open up a site to compare and review registrars. I’ll let everyone know when it’s up.
Once again, nice forum.

If you are going to buy from yahoo domains at the $2.99 price, then make it worth your while and reg for 5 years - then transfer out to your preferred registrar. It's a good deal if that's the way you approach it!

But i though you cant transfer domains from Yahoo. | On the contrary, you can transfer your domains out of yahoo... matter of fact, I've transferred domains out of yahoo that I had unlocked and there were no permission emails or approval emails sent. This may have changed but it used to be you'd register with yahoo and you had to lock your domain on your own. I think they automatically lock them now.
Basically, if your domain isn't locked down in yahoo, a transfer can take place and you'd know nothing about it until you checked your account.
Again, use yahoo to register $2.99 domains for 5 years then transfer them out after 60 days. Just keep track otherwise they will auto-renew.
