Microsoft... will they ever be overtaken?

Do you think Microsoft, the "king" of the computer, will ever have some serious competition in the field that they specialize in? I mean Windows is the main operating system of the world though.

Personally I don't think it will happen in the next few decades at least. I mean there's no reason to switch over to anything else yet but perhaps we have certain needs that we aren't aware of. Maybe a new company will come along and address those needs.

I heard somewhere before that Vista is the last OS they will release and that they will focus afterwards on Internet applications.

I think what they may have meant is that future Windows will be subscription based with smaller updates rolled out incrementally.

that pretty much already happens apart from the subscription based part, they may do so in the future and if they do, I will use Linux

IMO.. after 5-10 years Windows will not be the #1 operating system anymore.. Why? Because license windows is too expensive.. here in my country 60-70% of windows user is not a license.

So why not using a free operating system if there is available, like Linux.

Yes, by Google and Unix/Linux. Everyone prefers free services to paying gobs of money for inferior services.
