Default Domain names with special characters like !?@#$%^&*()

If I find a 3 or better yet 2 letter domain that contains a special character, would be it worth it to register? I know .com, .net, .org are the top three but .biz and .info should be good as well.

Example, www.h!.com would that have value?
What about if I made a website about apples and use apples! since apples is already taken?

Special characters aren't allowed in domain names.

Namecheap allows special characters, although if I manually type them in the browser, it says page cant be found or gives me an error. But I see that websites with special characters such as www.c%%d.com is "taken" maybe its "reserved" and when someone tries to register, it shows as "taken" so what characters are allowed? letters, numbers and hypen(-) what else? underscore(_)?
