Why is GoDaddy number one?

I still prefer Namecheap although I have bought domains at Godaddy.

In terms of total number of registrations, sure. Other standards and it can get potentially personal.

IMHO they're number one because they're able to give what majority of domain registrants want. It was a slow and steady growth.

That's like saying Google is number one. That's an opinion, not a fact. In my opinion GoDaddy is not number one. I prefer my hosting company or NameCheap. They're number one.

i don't think that GoDaddy are the best, I really prefer namecheap, it's a really good registrar with reasonable prices and fantastic support...can't say that for GoDaddy...)

fun discussion on how Go Daddy is considered "number one" by a
couple of people.

I'll put it this way: the "number one" registrar is the one who has
met your expectations consistently. And still does.

godaddy is currently number one on quantity but not sure about quality since I never use them.

I actually know the answer! Godaddy is number 1 because they hire scantily clad models. Oh yeah!

Seriously, I think people are more familiar with Godaddy because they spend a lot on advertisements. They may not be the best, but they're earning a lot.

People definitely know godaddy more than other domain registrars, i have used 2 domain registrars, betlikdomain and godaddy. I didn't notice any difference in terms of quality except that godaddy took upto a day to work, while the other started working right after i set the nameservers.

Popularity and branding really helps, anyway not everything that is popular is good

GoDaddy were one of the pioneers in providing domain names for affordable prices. At a time when the market leaders were charging $30+ per domain, GoDaddy invested huge amounts of money and ran at a loss for many years in order to develope profitable methods of selling hosting while losing money on domains.

It took years for many of the large domain buyers to shift from their prefered domain registras but through time GoDaddy proved to their critics that they could survive and eventually become profitable while running with low mark-ups for domains. Since then they have provided very good customer service and built a very loyal following and reached a point where they can afford to advertise to the masses that very few competitors can do.

Other domain name providers have done very well in the same time (e.g. Enom, Moniker, etc...) but GoDaddy has focussed on the entreprenour market with services to match and has had some very effective marketing, Enom - the reseller market, Moniker - the investor market, etc...)

Another thing about GoDaddy is that Bob had a lot of money to risk and he was willing to risk it. Most of the competitors focussing on domains were not as big gamblers or started with less.

Now other providers provide just as good prices and services but they have to work very hard to win over the loyal customer base of GoDaddy. Even Google is prefering to sell as a GoDaddy reseller than provide competition. (Smart move as advertising has a lot higher mark-up than domains)

Well I won't argue whether they are #1 or not and what the definition of #1 is but I will say that I will NEVER use them. Why? Well besides that stupid godaddy girl from the WWE on their commercials, I've heard too many horror stories about them.

I was using bulkregister for like 7 years and they just merged or something with enom and I'm moving all mine to namecheap because they are a little cheaper and everyone brags how much they love them.

Oh back to why they "may" be number 1. Do you see any other domain register advertising on television? I don't.
