PPC is definitely the top money maker right now (at least for small to medium sized websites). Websites that are big enough to get paid via CPM instead of PPC can make more money through CPM. However, you need to be serviving up hundreds of thousands of uniques to see good revenue through CPM.

It is much harder to count on affiliate commissions. At least thats been my experience. PPC seems to be more stable and consistent.

Once your site has good traffic, probably affiliate ads are better

Well I guess it depends on who your adience is too. If your adience is looking to buy something.. affiliate ads are probably better. If not, PPC

I put up a whole bunch of Amazon.com merch on my hockey site and made $17 the first week the site was up and not a dime since (6 months).

Only you will know what is better in the long run. What you need to do is to test each thing for around a month and the one that earns you the most, you will then have your answer. Is also depends on the networks rate of pay also, so that is also an important factor to consider when deciding. I prefer to use both. In other words, I would use banners on an entertainment/gaming site and ppc on a business like site. The reasons for this is because I have found youngsters are more likely to click on banner ads.

A site such as dnlodge would have a MUCH higher chance of developing a successful PPC profit rate, rather then setting up a affiliate banner marketing system. Advertisers that want their banner to be seen want thousands to see it, not just a few hundred of the same people daily.
