Default Power connector on the motherboard

OK noob question here.

The last PC I built was a P4 and you know the 4 prong power connector that you plug into the motherboard that is close to the CPU, right? Well, my new board has an EIGHT prong female connector. Why is it now an eight prong?

Also, when I took it out of the box, it has a cover that covered up 4 of the holes. I have since taken it off to reveal all 8 holes.

Now, why is it now an 8 prong connector instead of a 4 prong? Will I need a new power supply?

What is your new board? I wasn't aware that there was a big variety of power supply connectors on motherboards.
