I recommend GIMP to - it's open source nature means that new features will get added quicker than on Photoshop. It can be a bit of a gripe to work with the UI, but it is acceptable once you get used to it. It can read most photoshop files too, which makes it a viable alternative. Suffice to say, I use it for all my website work.

People use PS more than Gimp for the same reason people wear gap jeans over some walmart brand. Even though most likely those gap jeans are infact those walmart jeans with a gap label.

People pay for a well known name.

I think he means more of how cool you feel when you say "I use Photoshop" vs "I use GIMP."

Some of the tools on GIMP are ... independantly minded, and need some taming for them to work for you. A good virus might do the trick. For example, the radial blur isn't actually what you'd expect it to be, and needs an option ticking to make it equivilent to Photoshop's radial blur. Oh, well!

Hmmm. . . never heard of Gimp- will it save in PS format? Since that's the industry standard and often a requested format for items.

Do plug ins work with Gimp? What about brushes? It would be great to share a cheaper software with my friends. But, in my world, it would have to have to be compatible with these types of things.

I'll have to put it on my list of things to try next month. . .

I've used PSE 2.0 and now use PS CS (1). I use it for some web design but mainly for digital scrapbooking.

it does save in psd format, and it has some pretty cool brushes! a lot of very cool effects. it really is as feature rich as PS. Just takes some getting used to.

I use Photoshop CS. Photoshop is the only graphic software I'm comfortable with, and I don't see myself switching anytime soon
