Need a little extra help on unstanding URL's

Hay folks, I am still a bit hung up on understanding URL's and what and how they work.
I wrote on another thread that I was trying to upload my avatar onto a forum site I belong to. Can some one give me a good example of how I would take a avatar from my system and up load it to a forum site.
I would also like to know how would I place a example drawing or sketch on a thread I am talking with some one about a subject as a explaination drawing such as Using the picture Icon above?

Php or "Hypertext Preprocessor" is a sever side language used for creating dynamic websites. It typically has html embedded in it. This is open source technology vs. ASP which is windows based.

Forums allow you to upload images. You have to find the "upload avatar" or image link in your user panel for that forum. It will open a window and ask you to point it the file on your computer. The website takes care of all the work.

On this website go to "User CP" and select edit avatar. From here you can upload an image to this site. Don't worry about the url part. You would only use this if you were storing the image on another website.
