Hello! What would you say is the best screen size of a website. I've just started on a new one, but i know it wont fit on most monitors. Mine is set to 1280 x 960 which makes it hard to judge on smaller resolution. I hate changing it as is messes with my icons . So, what's a good size to use in this age?
Don't make it wider than 1000px. Actually, I would recommend 780px.
My statistics shows that only 15-20% of my visitors have screen width of 1280px or wider. And 5-7% visitors are still using 800 x 600 monitors.
You don't have to change your screen resolution to look at your website from the visitor's point of view. Just use a free software that changes the size of your browser window. If you're using Firefox, there are plugins for that.

I would also suggest to use 1024x768 pixels screen resolution. It's more important that your site can accomodate not only teen visitors but also for those senior citizen. Technology seems getting high tech and you need also to adopt their environment.
1024x768 is the most used 'Desktop' resolution at this point in time. But you should take into consideration the browser itself and allow for the header, footer, and sidebars of the browser to optimise your 'Website' resolution.
