I've been hearing some about a new version
of phpBB comming out.
So I'm wondering has it came out already?
And what are the new features.
And if you know any sites using the new
version, please post a link!

I think you're reffering to the phpBB 3 or Olympus (heard this is the name, might be wrong). Well it's in development stages and some people are testing it. Will have some of the most important hacks already installed .. If everything goes well, VB would get some serious kick in the back with all the features planned for phpBB 3. I don't know too much about it still ...

Yea, but phpbb still can't match the support vB offers, and there
continuos security updates that come out at least once a month.

No offence Brandon .. there are thousands of phpBB modders. The support it awesome. I have learnt to mod my phpBB boards since I could find A LOT of tutorials and people able to help.
Just because phpBB is free it doesn't mean the support is bad. Since there are millions of boards running this script (it's a free one and VERY popular), expect a great developers team.
The new phpBB is gonna be a hit if everything is OK. It's got a lot of features by default. phpBB has been a good script for me. I have all VBs features (in my main forum) and I just don't quite feel like paying right now.
I am thrilled about the new version. It's filled with some of the features VB and IPB have as default, so it's gonna be some serious 'fight'. Still, it's not ready yet, so we're just manually modding our boards (to be honest I love this .. after some time you get to even like the code changes)

I like vB more. The source is encoded, so there is much, much less chance for any hack ins.

As far as free ones go, phpBB is definitely the best, but I would prefer vB, but I like many others, don't want to pay for it.

I don't think phpBB is the best for free. I prefer SMF. phpBB is very vulnerable if you don't update when new releases come out (like, you wait for a few days). I've known many people who've gotten hacked.

phpBB3 is some serious competition for vB. It has a lot of the same MODs as vB preinstalled. It's still in its beta though and it's not recommended you use it for anything but testing.

It has taken them a lot of time to get it out. I would still go for other forum softwares because of this. v2 is already stale :|
