Best way to start a site

What would you suggest doing to jump start a community based site?

have you tried contests? offer something free on a weekly basis to get people excited about the site

Yea, I would agree contest would be a big one, just have to get some money as the prize, or something like that. Or maybe with a webkmaster commmunity, a domain or two.

Its easiest when tyou have a budget, buy some ad space and see how it goes.

i agree, you cant get jumpstart on its own. there are many forums out there and people are already using them. so unless you provide something to attract people, they are not going to come to another forum.

i see many people pay money so people should post on their forums.

and in my opinion Dn Lover is right. if you have budget, its easier to do these things
