| | What is your opinion on Simple Machines?
I'd like to start a forum and have heard and seen plenty of php and Vbulletin boards. I've very little about http://simplemachines.org Do you have any experience with these boards? Do you have forum running on their software?

I personally like working with SMF. I launched a SMF board for a client, earlier this year, and plan to launch a couple of my own in the month of October. I switched my client's forum to SMF after giving up on phpBB in frustration.. seems quite a bit easier to work with for me, personally.

The way I see it is that Simple Machines is concerned with security first and foremost. I've heard complaints that their aren't a lot of hacks for it, but again I think that goes to the security issue.

I would NEVER go with SMF. phpBB is the way to go, easy to manage, pretty secure, tons of mods, and anything you will ever need. The poeple that give up in frustration are the people who arnt used to phpbb's interface, which is pretty easy to learn, and REALLY easy to learn for the registered member.

I personally like phpBB. It's just that their to be too many security problems. It's being around longer than SMF and it has a larger user base, so that has something to do with. However, SMF seems built with security in mind first.

I never tried it. I am an avid phpBB user and love the script.

I couldn't give you a list off the top of my head but I like the admin area, the support, the security, and the look better, personally. I am not a fan of phpBB and, up until recently, I've never really seen a quality skin available for it.

Well, it has many options out of the box. MORE than phpBB. This is something I will always admit since it's the truth ...
But I like to use phpBB exactly because it has less features and I can make it as I wish ... SMF is a great option, it's just not appealing to me. |

So I would suggest just trying one or both out.. and see what you like more. It is more of a matter of personal oppinion.

I have 2 sites running SMF and one site running phpBB. I have been a long time phpBB user but I like SMF more now, but the best way is how I am testing both out against eachother.

I am making the transition to Get Vanilla! aside from that I only use simplemachines when I need a forum.
It is the only one that comes standards compliant out of the box. It has plenty of mods as well, and much faster than other forum scripts.
Vanilla is about to blow them all away. Its a much better way of thinking about things. It is however much earlier in its development cycle.
hope that helps

Interesting! I'll have to check out Vanilla and see how it compares.
Thanks for the link, Nigel!

I actually like SMF. I tried phpBB before but I wasn't so pleased with it.
Of course if I can afford VB, I'd get VB!

Are you the owner of LostWebForums? I'm addicted to that show.
