My only real experience is with SMF and I am really impressed with it. Maybe after a little time as co-owner here, I may grow to love phpBB but, in the meantime, my other forum projects will continue to be done in SMF and I will continue to hold onto the hope that I can convert Brandon, LOL!

I'm using vBulletin on my forum, but in the past I've used phpBB and I've learned to love it almost as much as vB because of how easilly I could customize it.

phpBB is my choice. I use IPB too, but only phpBB gives me the freedom to be as creative as I wish in my layouts. It's a great script in the hands of someone who knows how to mod it and customize it. I like the fact it has limited features. This way I can implement ONLY what I need to make it good for my community. And the tpl system of template files is awesome. I can redesign huge parts of the theme and fit them in the layout

Well if you want to upgrade to paid.. vBulletin offers much more than any other free one offers. Free support with your purchase also.

vB is the best, since u can edit all you want and it's very powerful but for many newbies phpBB is very good.

phpBB is my software of choice!
I despise vBulletin, simply because the style editor is awful!

Yes, but anyone who votes phpbb probably never owned vB. vB is a huge step up from phpbb. YOu should see the admin panel for vBulletin. It is crazy, theres like a ton of settings to get your forum like you want it.

Well, I have IPB. And the admin panel is also filled with features. But when I can't mod the forums theme as I want and put ONLY what I want, then I am getting really upset. I have some of the heaviest modded phpBBs possible (script and theme) and I love my freedom.
I have a VB on my PC from a friend. I have tested it locally .. Don't like it that much

well... i have tried/seen IPB, SMF, PHPBB, K4BB, MyBB, VB and MyTopix admin and user panel. Well each of this has its own features.
Like IPB, most of the GFX forums used it. While VB, most huge forums used it since its safer than most of it competitors. PHPBB, SMF, MyBB, K4BB are some of the FREE forum scripts. The most well known currently is PHPBB followed by SMF and MyBB then K4BB and MyTopix. MyTopix, K4BB and MyBB is quite new so it needs time to gain ppl using it.
Well for me, VB is the best for paid scripts and MyBB is best for free and PHPBB is good for open source... lol

I prefer vBulletin over everything. I prefer IPB as an alternative though.

I personally like vBulletin. But because I modded an IPB 1.3 board of mine, I can't think of an upgrade without spending a few months later on working to make those modifications in all areas.
For some reason, I believe the default stuff of a forum is very important such as default smileys, style, etc.. It needs to be the best for people to like it. I don't like SMF because of it's default layout! I broke my head trying to make it look better 2 days and ended up pressing the shift + delete button on the directory.

The best paid forum is either Invision or vBulletin. I'd say the best free forum is MyBB.

Yea, to be honest, I've not been a fan of IPB at all. I think it is probably better than phpBB but that isn't saying much.
